Leader's stone yurt

Leader's stone yurt

On 8 October 2005, we inaugurated the Leader's Stone Yurt, which was built by the artist himself, the woodcarver Béla Ferencz, as an exhibition space for his works, based on the plans of Lajos Borbély.

The circular building stands next to the original Mongolian yurt tents. The carvings illustrate the major events in Hungarian history, from the Avar period to Hungary's accession to the EU. Béla Ferencz was born in 1922 in Târgu Mures, and studied at the Székelyudvarhely School of Woodcarving and Sculpture, before leaving his hometown, first to Budapest and then to the United States in 1951. His work has been exhibited worldwide and he has become known as one of the most inspired woodcarvers of modern times. His works can be seen in two places in Hungary, in Lakitelek and in the Gellérthegy Rock Church in Budapest.
